NBOA's “Demographics of the Independent School Business Office Report: Key Research Findings 2025” provides insights into workforce trends of the independent school business office, particularly since 2020. The report includes analysis of the demographic, educational and professional backgrounds of business office staff; career history and career satisfaction among business office professionals; and trends impacting the independent school business office. The report also includes extensive data on salaries by position and school type.
The report reveals increased racial diversity, with 25% of respondents identifying as non-white in 2024, up from 18% in 2020. It also notes a growing gender pay gap, with women's salaries rising more slowly than men's. Schools are modernizing by adopting AI and offering remote/hybrid work options. Younger professionals are returning to independent schools, with high job satisfaction driven by joy and meaning. However, 31% of respondents reported planning to leave the field of independent schools, with 45% of these individuals planning to leave the profession within the next three years.
